Sketches of the vineyards of Baranja, Batina, Wines Kalazić and company Kronos Ltd.
The vineyards of Baranja are situated on the slopes of Banska Kosa or Banovo Brdo near the mighty Danube, which is the average width of 400 meters and has a major impact on the microclimate making it, among other factors, suitable for production of high quality grapes, which is again a base for the production of top quality wines.
Our vineyards are located at an average altitude between 180 and 200 m, the soil is porous, with a high content of sand and as such is an excellent foundation for obtaining mineral wines and highly extracted wines. The climate is quite harsh with large fluctuations between winter minimum and maximum summer temperatures. It is not rare to have a winter with temperatures reaching -20̊ C as well as summer temperatures up to 40̊ C. By the number of sunny days per year only we are only slightly inferior to our sunniest island of Hvar, but with an annual rainfall of about 700 mm, we’re even.
All of the above was discovered by the ancient Romans and so on numerous archaeological sites around Batina, which date back to the past, to the Bronze Age, we find evidence that wine was produced here thousands of years. The most beautiful proof that an area is wine-growing is when it spontaneously sprouts wild vines. Otherwise, Batina from his position due to excellent views of the surrounding area was excellent as protruding point for the Roman guards and watchtowers opposite so called Wild tribes which came from the north and east and threatened the security of the Empire.
Let’s go back to the near past. Recognizing the vineyards of Baranja as one of the most potent world’s vineyards, as owner of Kronosin 2002 I adopted a decision to invest in Baranja, specifically in the production of grapes for wine and wine as a final product. In 2007 we had the first serious crop on an area of 16 ha, and plantations under ten varieties of vines from about 102,000 vines. From that, we made grape wine for which we by the Institute of Viticulture and Enology get category “superior” to even 7 varieties of ten as was planted. It was an absolute benchmark in up until then, Croatia wine history.
Our production is between 150 and 200 thousand bottles a year, and we are currently constructing a modern winery that will primarily provide further pushing the boundaries of quality wines, although the recent results are impressive. In a short period of several years from the appearance on the market we have won over 60 gold medals at the international and national assessment of wine. It should be noted our several championship places: BeoWine, Belgrade for the Gewurztraminer, the two champions of the St. Ivan Zelina (our largest continental wine evaluation) as well as the runner-up place in Slovakia. Currently we export wine to Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland.
